Things To Do In Barnsley With Kids: Elsecar Park and Cafe

Elsecar is one of my favourite days out. We really love the Elsecar Heritage Centre, there’s so much to do there but a visit to Elsecar Park is always top on our list when we visit Elsecar. It’s free, fun, green-flag awarded and really nice for kids, and the cafe is lovely. Things To Do In Barnsley With Kids: Elsecar Park and Cafe

Elsecar is a old, historical, 18th century village in Barnsley and the Heritage Centre is an attraction, a working industry hub and a unique day out. Elsecar Park and cafe is just nearby, there are canal walks to enjoy, an old heritage railway, shops, cafes, antique stores, Playmania indoor play centre, museum, a busy calendar of events and much more. Elsecar Heritage Centre is on the Trans Pennine trail and easily accessible by bus and train from Sheffield. Things To Do In Barnsley With Kids: Elsecar Park and Cafe

The Teacup Cafe in Elsecar Park is a lovely place for kids, selling essentials for a day out like snacks, sports, toys, buckets and spades, etc., There is seating inside with a nice atmosphere and a menu serving hot and cold food. Ice creams and all the usual treats are available including homemade cakes! High chairs are available and there are some kids books. The staff are really nice! And outside the cafe is a little train ride which Eric loves 😉

Playgrounds at Elsecar Park are brilliant… it is a green-flag awarded park, too, so it’s very clean and landscaped nicely. It’s just pleasant to be there. There’s different types of play equipment to suit all ages like toddler play frames, slides and swings, equipment for disabilities, volley ball pit and wooden play set with stepping stones, logs, etc., There is more than enough space to play your own games.

You can enjoy a picnic either on the grass or there are picnic tables by the cafe; they will bring food/drinks out to you. There is a mini-golf, nine hole pitch and putt, pond dipping, reservoir and nature reserve, toilets, gym work-out frames and equipment, bird hide and bandstand.

You can have a little walk around the park, with a bridge going over the reservoir with nice views. Sometimes there are sheep down there on the grassy verges to spot and at the opposite end to the playground over the bridge is another car park. It’s an easy trail which a toddler would be able to do; not too far and goes around in a loop. It’s just 5 minutes way from the Heritage Centre on foot, there is plenty of parking nearby.

You can find the park at Armroyd Ln, Elsecar, Barnsley S74 8EY. It’s only daily, from dawn until dusk. We love it because there’s loads to do in the area and you can easily make a day of it by exploring Elsecar on foot, so park the car if you’re driving and go on a walk. You’ll love it, and it’s free. 🙂
