Mini Professors classes in Sheffield are 5* rated, Children’s Activities Association Gold accredited and What’s On 4 Kids Awards 2018 nominated. These fun and engaging science classes are created by science experts to bring science classes to 2-5 year olds, in an understandable and exciting format that they absolutely love!
Sounds good, but what happens in the classes?
The classes are specifically designed for 2-5 year olds, which can aid your child’s social and cognitive development. With over 80 different themes from dinosaurs to the brain, your child will never experience the same class twice! Classes are approximately 40 minutes long and follows a set format so the children know what to expect next.
Mini Professors classes provide a warm and welcoming environment in which young children can not only explore and marvel at science but we also encourage many life skills, such as asking and answering questions, turn taking, sharing and socialising.
- Our Mini Professors get to wear their own mini lab coats and learn about the basic principles of scientific experimentation.
- A typical class starts with our Mini Professors Welcome Song, followed by an introduction to today’s topic with pictures and props.
- All Mini Professors are encouraged to get stuck in with their first experiment and their grownups to join in (and maybe get messy!).
- Sessions are then followed up with a short video, related to the scientific topic, and a story followed by another fantastic science experiment.
- At the end of the lesson, a summary of what has been learnt along with a goodbye song finished up the class. Each child is given a sticker for their own research log book.
Unlike many classes, Mini Professors will be running over the summer holidays as well as half-terms.
Visitors are always welcome, we encourage partners/grandparents to come along and enjoy as well.
Which classes can I choose from?
There are three classes to choose from: Super Science Saturday/Sundays, Fantastic Thursdays and Flabbergasting Fridays. Bonus classes include science week and Wow Wee Wednesdays Mayfield Alpacas Farm starting from April (ready to book now – and expected to be popular!)
There are two separate sessions for 2-3 year 8 month olds and 3 year 8 months-5 year olds, with a completely new and exciting scientific topic being taught each week.

Who will be teaching?
Julia (Professor Ju Ju to the Mini Profs) is the owner of Mini Professors Sheffield West. She has always had a great passion and enthusiasm for science. Ju Ju has two children (Tilly, 3 and Florence, 7 months) and likes nothing more than talking with them about random facts and doing their own experiments at home!
Over the past 15 years, Ju Ju has been in education or employment relating to science. From a 1st Class Hons degree in Biomedical Science and PhD in Bone Cancers. For the last 10 years, Professor Ju Ju has worked at The University of Sheffield researching a devastating bone cancer called myeloma. She has thoroughly enjoyed all of the STEM and outreach activities, particularly with young children, and has even undertook work placements at nurseries.
We will be trying out Mini Professors this week (end of February) so make sure to check back for our review 🙂 I think Eric will really like it (and me!) though it’s been quite a while since I did any science…!
Update: here’s the review!
