A historical day out to Eyam plague village in the Peak District and National Trust Eyam Hall visit

Eyam village in the Peak District dates back to the Roman era and is famously known for the outbreak of bubonic plague in 1665. A beautiful picturesque village with a sad history.

There are a few cafes, pubs and shops in the village, as well as a museum, but I went to Eyam to visit Eyam Hall, a 17th century national trust Jacobean style mansion.

I took my mum with me who loves history and it was a lovely morning. I hadn’t been to the hall before and had only passed through Eyam on the bus. I’m so glad we went because it was fascinating and I’ll definitely be returning.

Where? Eyam is an English village in the Hope Valley, Peak District. Find it here. Eyam Hall and craft centre is just off the Main Street of Eyam and opening times are here.

What is there to do? Stroll around and see the plague cottages, take a countryside walk, cycle, visit Eyam museum and Eyam Hall and craft centre, shopping, national trust family activities.

Price and access: To go inside Eyam Hall it costs £8.09 an adult and £4.05 without gift aid. Prams are not suitable for inside the house. Eyam is reachable by bus from Sheffield with 272, 271 and 65.

My favourite parts were the cottages, all the old furniture and decor in the hall and the upstairs rooms… especially the tapestry room.

What do you think? It was such a nice experience, I love old houses and halls and imagining what the people did back then. Whether it is haunted or not, who knows? But it did feel spooky!

Do you have any favourite national trust places to visit?

  1. Oh it looks so interesting but very sad, i bet it feels a bit spooky with all that loss, I particularly love the old dolls house I would have spent ages looking at that. Thanks so much for linking up #mondayescapes
