An overnight stay in Leeds; family trip to Royal Armouries museum, and a day at Roundhay park

family trip to royal armouries and roundhay park Leeds

We stayed overnight in Leeds and visited Royal Armouries museum and Roundhay Park. It was a lovely trip, and the two days out were completely free. There are so many amazing things to do in Leeds for families. Leeds is a city we visit often for a family trip as it is quick to reach by train from Sheffield. There are so many family attractions and days out in Leeds and around Leeds, we love it for a day out or for a overnight stay. There are still many things we have not done in Leeds, even though we have been quite a few times in the last year or so! Read my guide on 7 things to do in Leeds if you want to find out more.

This time for my partners birthday we stayed overnight in the park plaza hotel. Right in the city centre this hotel was really convenient for us as it was next to the train station, so we were able to dump bags before going out for the day. We headed out to catch the free Leeds water taxi from Leeds dock which sails to Royal Armouries, this is something we love to do in Leeds and is always a hit with Eric! It’s much more fun than walking or catching a bus to the museum!

The taxi only takes a few minutes. Eric always really enjoys the ride; looking out to the water, watching the other boats pass by and looking out of the window!

The Royal Armouries museum is very big and there is so much to see and do there. Right at Leeds Dock, this museum is free to visit. There are five main galleries over five flours from hunting, armoury and self defence. The museum houses over 5,000 objects; many of which are interesting to kids… especially the hunting gallery for Eric which has examples of animals being used such as horses and elephants! The armoury on display is so interesting and impressive; some of the old historic pieces are thousands of years old.

We have been before and only manage a few galleries before having lunch and calling it a day; you could spend as little or as long as you like. Eric enjoyed playing in the free Jesters Yard play area which had dressing up, soft play and role play areas, including toys and crafts. It’s worth a visit as it’s free and there’s some cool play equipment to entertain kids for a while!

We explored some of the galleries including oriental, arena, self defence and hunting. The museum has lots of space which is great for toddlers. We love the staircase with all the tools and armoury running through the middle… it’s an impressive space.

Eric’s favourite was the hunting elephant…

We had our lunch sat outside the museum as it was a lovely day. The water taxi took us back into the city centre, ahoy!

Our hotel, the park plaza, was so nice! The room was spacious and it was very peaceful, I would definitely stay there again.

Hello, room service?

On the second day we went to Roundhay Park. This is somewhere we have been before when we went to tropical world (read that blog here) but planned to spend all day there this time. It had been raining overnight and in the early morning, it was quite cold but there were lovely spring flowers out in bloom.

The castle ruins are so pretty! We had fun exploring this historical landmark, Eric loved climbing the steps and at the top was pretty views across the park. The castle was once used as a hunting lodge and summer house. It is known as a folly and was designed in the form a medieval gateway. Back in the day, the castle would have had a wooden roof. Can you imagine all the dinners enjoyed in there in the 1800’s?

After an hour or so of enjoying the park more, we headed to the cafe and had lunch, finishing up with the Roundhay train which took us back to the entrance. This was the cherry on top for Eric as he’s a train fanatic! Roundhay Park was so much fun, we had a lovely day.

  1. What a fab couple of days out! It makes me want to jump on the train and go to Leeds for a day out with the boys. They’d love the armouries. Such a surprise to see the elephant and tiger scene, as it’s not really part of day to day life these days (one would hope!)

    Beautiful photos.
