You may have already heard all about Local Baby & Child Event at Ponds Forge on Sunday 21st October at Ponds Forge. I’m super excited and will be there on the day; I wouldn’t miss this one! Exclusive Q&A with Martyn from Local Baby & Child Event, Sheffield
Why is this event different from anything we have seen before? Local Baby & Child Event aims to brings together and celebrate some of the best independent businesses in the region. Local and inspiring businesses who specialise in baby/child products and services in Sheffield… all the more reason to go and show our support.
Local Baby & Child Event is sponsored by Water Babies and Imagination Grows. Water Babies will be on the stage area at 1pm, offering a dry-side taster of what their swim lessons are like, and Imagination Grows will be supplying some amazing toys for the play area.
Local Baby & Child Event will be South Yorkshire’s biggest baby and child fayre. Just take a look at the huge list of Exhibitors here.
Local Baby & Child Event will bring a big variety of talented local businesses including shops, classes and services all in one place for you to sample and speak to, in a no-pressure and supportive environment. Martyn Ryan, a first time dad in Sheffield, was inspired to organise this unique event from his own experience. Martyn came to realise that it can be difficult to find local businesses to buy from in the area in comparison to huge brands that dominate the market.
This is why at Local Baby & Child Event, it is all about buying local and supporting local business. We are so lucky to live in such a family friendly city here in Sheffield… and Martyn hopes to demonstrate just that.
Whether you are expecting, have a baby, a toddler or know someone who is; do go along on Sunday 21st at Ponds Forge.
Your tickets will be automatically entered in to a prize draw to win cash to spend on the day and for the chance of winning a huge hamper worth of goodies. Plus, it’s not only stalls. Entertainment includes free taster sessions, demos and performances on throughout the day. You’ll be pleased to know that you are donating to charity when purchasing a ticket, too, as 10% of all ticket sales will go to Martyn’s chosen charity, Baby Basics.

I asked Martyn who is behind the event a few questions so we can get to know more about him and the event behind the scenes. Martyn really is a lovely guy and it was lovely to talk to him. Martyn even volunteered his time to help me at Never Grow Up event back on 1st September. Thank you Martyn for your help; I’m so grateful and I really hope your event is a success. I wish you all the best!
Q&A with Martyn Ryan
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Martyn. Me and my wife had our first child, Teddy, almost 18 months ago. The last few years have been very busy for us – we moved in to our first house, got engaged, got married, had Teddy, and started organising Local Baby and Child Event , all in 3 years. Oh, and whilst my wife was pregnant I managed to put on more weight than she did.
Could you tell us about a few things you love to do in Sheffield with your family?
We love the big open spaces in the city and Teddy loves just running around before either having a go on a swing or a slide. Our favourites are probably Millhouses Park with a picnic or Graves Park to see the animals.
What was your inspiration behind Local Baby & Child Event?
We had Teddy and we ended up buying everything from big companies, because we didn’t really know about all of the independent businesses locally. Then we started finding out about more and more of them and thought it would be a great idea to show local families, across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, what else was available to them.
Is the event going to be busy?
Well, we’ve already got lots of local businesses from across the region confirmed. And we want as many families to find out about all the really great offers, quality unique products and great services that are on offer locally. But don’t worry, we know what it’s like trying to shop in a busy place with babies and toddlers so we’ve allowed plenty of space between stalls, a play area, a comfy feeding area, and a buggy park.
Why should parents come to Local Baby & Child Event?
From 10.30am, we’ll have things happening on the stage all day, including: a dry-side taster swim session with Water Babies, a mini fashion show with Bettybobs Clothing, a performance from Razzamataz, a taster session from Noodle and we’ll have the Sheffield Sling Surgery and Library talking about slings and baby wearing.
Away from the stage Truly Scrumptious will be doing free 10 minute complementary taster massages, and we’ll have a comfy feeding area and a play area with lots of toys including some lovely wooden toys from Imagination Grows.
Anyone who purchases a ticket before the event will be entered in to a draw to win cash to spend on the day. And we’ll have 3 huge prize hampers to give away, too, which will be full of vouchers and goodies from our amazing exhibitors.
All of this is on top of bringing you loads of top local businesses all in one place, with great shopping opportunities, and experts who can give you the advice you want.
10% of all ticket sales will go to Baby Basics, a local charity supporting local families in poverty.
What has been the most difficult part of organising the event?
I’d say it’s been making sure that it’s a day out for the family, rather than a shopping trip where the little ones will get bored. But it’s definitely been worth it because there will be loads going on through the day across the whole event to keep everyone entertained.
Do you have any advice for anyone who is interested in planning an event for families?
Even though things will be hectic running up to the event, make sure you find time to spend with your own family.
Is the event going to be an annual thing? Or is it just a one-off?
After this event, we’ll take a look and figure out whether it will be an annual thing or whether we do 2 events per year, as well as some other things we have planned. But for now we’re focussed on making this event a great day for everyone and we hope to see you and your children there.
Besides the event you are busy organising, what else have you been up to recently?
Well I also have a day job, working for a charity, which keeps me busy, travelling the country. I let Teddy take up lots of time whenever I can, and then if there’s any time left we’ve been re-watching Cold Feet on catch up.
Don’t forget to enter code “Trips” for a 20% discount to the “Ticket for 2 people” when booking online HERE.
Head back after the event as I’ll be posting up some photos I will have taken on the day; I’m really looking forward to it!
