Autumnal walks

Norfolk Heritage Park in autumn What’s on this weekend in and around Sheffield for kids October 12/13

Go for an autumn stroll through the woods this weekend. I highly recommend the forge dam walk, it’s simply wonderful at this time of year. At Forge Dam there is a nice cafe. Then you can take a trail through the woods right to Endcliffe Park if you’d like, or turn back whenever. Or you could start at Endcliffe Park and walk that way instead, the walk is linear. Shepherd Wheel workshop will be open, too and it’s free.

For more autumnal walks, we’re spoilt for choice in Sheffield. I recommend Ecclesall Woods the largest ancient woodland in Sheffield, and there is a cafe “the woodland coffee stop“. It’s very fun to go into the deep, dark woods at Ecclesall Woods.

Norfolk Park offers a big adventure playground and cafe, plus the choice of 2 woodlands. We love it here. It’s very pretty in autumn and the big woodlands up towards the hill past the playgrounds have big, wide paths that are great for running wild.

Clumber Park in workshop has loads of walking trails, plus bike hire, play areas, woodlands and places to eat.

Shirebrook nature reserve in south east Sheffield offers open fields, woodlands and plenty of puddles to splash in.

Valley Gardens, Harrogate What’s on this weekend in and around Sheffield for kids October 12/13
Valley Gardens Harrogate

If you can travel to harrogate this weekend, valley gardens is a really good FREE park and nearby RHS Harlow Carr is fantastic. We went last autumn and it’s still one of my favourite days out from the whole of last year.

Chatsworth House is a gorgeous in autumn. We recently went to the gardens which is one of my favourite places, ever. There is a nice (and free) walk in Stand Wood that’s a good few hours. The farmyard and adventure playgrounds are amazing.

Rivelin Valley Park have some amazing woodlands to wander in, we love walking some of the nature trail. Have you been recently? You should. There’s also a playground and a cafe.

Graves Park in S8 is a popular FREE day out, the woodlands are huge and you’re bound to find conkers, spot wildlife and have fun in the playgrounds. There is a free farm.

The Northwood fairy sanctuary near York looks like the most wonderful place and would be so autumnal. We haven’t been yet but it looks amazing.

More outdoor fun:

Indoor fun

Get active this weekend and try something new! There’s loads to choose from in this post from water parks to water sports, ice skating and more.

Kelham Island Museum is great and open on Sunday. It has a cafe, hands on exhibits, Sheffield industrial history and an indoor play area.

Looking for a BIG museum? Families love Eureka!… it’s so hands on and just great for kids, it’s in Halifax and you’ve probably heard about it. I recommend all of these fantastic museums for toddlers if you’d like to visit one this weekend.

Something a bit different… have you heard of the rainbow factory in Leeds? Erin from Yorkshire Tots says, “The Rainbow Factory is another day out to inspire creativity.   Perfect for little ones with big imaginations, it’s a creative arts play centre steeped in storybook magic. Children can dress up, role play, craft, and get involved in the many activities on offer throughout the day.”

Snozone

This sounds awesome… Snozone at Xscape are offering a £4.99 45 minute special deal for adult sledging until 18th October, valid this weekend when you book online using the code SLEDGE. Details here. Leah, a member of the trips with a tot community group did this and said, “Yesterday we went to Snozone in Castleford, we booked online and it was £4.99 each for 45mins of sledging. Just take waterproofs, wellies and gloves and you’re away, you can also hire waterproofs if needed. They supply helmets and sledges. It’s based in Xscape which has a cinema, loads of eating places, crazy golf, climbing walls and outdoor shops. Staff were really nice and welcoming and it we just had a fab time”

Try also trampolining or Air Haus inflatable park for something fun and indoors. Both offer parent and toddler only times even at weekends, or air Haus have a open family session for all ages. Find more trampolining places here.

The Deep in Hull is a good wet weather day out and no doubt will be a popular one this weekend, but also don’t miss Dinostar; a fab little interactive, hands on dinosaur museum only open weekends.

Head to Manchester Trafford centre for Sealife and LEGO discovery centre; both are 100% indoors and offer combo tickets.

Museum in and out: visit South Yorkshire aircraft museum in Doncaster. Loads of cockpits to go in and opportunity to get hands on with the aircrafts. You can take your own food, there are some light refreshments available, and exhibits are both indoor and out. If you’d prefer to dine out, there’s loads of options nearby at Doncaster Lakeside or the complex just next to the museum opposite Doncaster Dome, with restaurants like Frankie & Benny’s & McDonalds.

Swimming and park… I always mention this but it deserves to be in here week after week; our local park has lots to offer and has a swimming pool right across the road. Hillsborough Park and Hillsborough Leisure Centre 🙂

Have a day out at tropical butterfly house, wildlife and falconry centre. There’s so much to do there and I really love it… I remember going as a child and LOVING it and now I enjoy going there with my own family. They have started with their halloween decorations and entertainment, too. On weekends you can get a tractor ride and see animal encounters, talks and take part in crafts. There’s loads to do and it’s a great place.

Go for a walk at Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Such a lovely place and one of our personal favourites. Free and always a good one.

When the weather is unpredictable but you want a good day out then I like Elsecar in Barnsley, because there’s stuff to do indoor and out. There’s a small museum at the elsecar heritage centre, as well as a big indoor soft play centre Playmania, antique shops, gift shops and cafes. Elsecar park is just across the way and is really good.

Head into West Yorkshire and try somewhere new this weekend. We love going to Wakefield as there’s so much to do there… like the room on the broom adventure trail at anglers country park (free), pugneys country park (bike hire, playgrounds and train), nostell priory national trust, national coal mining museum for England, Hepworth gallery and more.

Cannon Hall Farm is always a popular one on weekends. Farm, indoor and outdoor play, restaurants, entertainment and animal handling. There’s something for everyone.

We love a day trip to York and it’s a good option even for wet weather. Especially for the national railway museum which is just fantastic and FREE, Yorkshire Museum, York castle gardens, York castle museum, York’s chocolate story, Jorvik and DIG! not to mention all the great places to shop and eat.
