Free Room On The Broom Adventure Trail For Kids

We love Room On The Broom. Julia Donaldson books are a pleasure to read and Room On The Broom was one of my sons first favourite books. We had to go to Anglers country park in Wakefield to see what the Room on the broom adventure trail was like and see the book come to life. Free Room On The Broom Adventure Trail For Kids

The room on the broom adventure trail is a 2 mile walk around Anglers country park where you can hunt all the characters from the Julia Donaldson book. The park is free entry and you can find the animal sculptures around the trail.

Explorer packs can be bought from the visitors centre for £2 which include treasure hunts, puzzles, crafts, a sticker, crayons and rubbings. The explorer pack contains things to do on the trail as well as to take home and would be best for 3+ year olds upto school age. The adventure trail itself is fun for all ages, and with it being free to visit it is worth the trip for a lovely day out.

The visitors centre has all the resources you need and is where you can buy the explorer packs. There is information of the local area, a craft area with toys (they run activities in school holidays, check the website), a tea room serving hot food and drinks, snacks and treats, picnic area and a playground.

There is also a woodland walk, cycle hire, toliets and bird food to purchase. The visitors centre and cafe are great! It adds a little extra to the day out and has all you need. We started with the playground and a coffee before heading on the trail.

The trail starts by the car park, here is where you can see the witch, yay!  Going onwards to start the trail around the water there is a great spot to stop and feed the ducks and geese, don’t forget the purchase the food at the visitors centre.

There is lots to emcourage little ones imagination along the walk and the adventure trail is spread out nicely. Along the way are rubbings, sculptures, clues, questions and letters to find for a word treasure hunt.

The trail is VERY muddy. We went on a day that wasn’t wet but had been raining a few days before. There were lots of puddles and boggy areas which meant sometimes we had to walk on the grass.

We were not prepared and wasn’t wearing wellies, and at one point I fell in the mud and got covered! Oops. It’s all fun though, right?! 😀

The trail is on flat path the whole way but wellies are a must as you can tell. 🙂

You could definitely spend a whole day at Anglers country park, doing the trail and having a picnic. It would be great in the summer. You could spread the tresure trails out all day, or make a day of it with the playground, sculptures and views.

We only did one half of the trail, but we will be back. It was too muddy on this day and we had to make a move to get home having been out all afternoon at the nearby Hepworth Gallery. I’m glad we went to see what it is like, though!

I can’t wait to take Eric back when he is older and we’re definitely going to look into doing more adventure trails. What a fantastic free day out!
