Review: Haven Blue Dolphin holiday park in Filey

Last March, we went on our first Family Haven Holiday in Filey. We got a cheap deal and headed off to Blue Dolphin park, in Filey with Eric who was 6 months old at the time. (Update: We have since been back to Haven parks twice since I wrote this blog post… so they must be doing something right!) They’re just perfect for us because we are on a budget and the holiday parks are very affordable, but the facilities and accommodation that you get included are fantastic for the price!

Why we chose Blue Dolphin

Simply at the time of booking this park came up as the cheapest; we used their website which I’ve always found to be the best deal outside of school holidays. We were able to book a week self catering in a standard caravan for under £100, which included use of all the facilities.

We don’t drive and Blue Dolphin park is easy to get to by public transport. We got a train from Sheffield to Filey and then a quick bus journey to outside the park. Blue Dolphin is close to Filey train station (2.7 miles) so a taxi would be around the same price.

We had never been to a Haven before as a family and we didn’t know what to expect, but found it was good value for money, facilities clean and a great variety of things to do, and the location of the park for local days out was excellent.

All of the days out we did we used public tranport, the buses were just outside the park.

On the park

The park was basic but had all the facilities you need for a family caravan holiday. The entertainment complex had swimming, bar and showroom, arcade, bar/pub and restaurant with outdoor seating, playground, paint pot studio, soft play, shops and fast food.

All facilities were clean, the staff were always friendly. The Brigghouse restaurant was big, modern and had a games area. We ate there a few times, the food was really nice. Our caravan was small but we didn’t need more space for just the 3 of us. Unfortunately the caravan wasn’t clean on arrival, but this was soon fixed. It was also really cold, but staff brought over 2 heaters. It was fine as a base and somewhere to sleep, we didn’t spend much time there.

There was a busy schedule of family activities during the morning and afternoon, with entertainment in the evening. As Eric was so young, we didn’t participate in many of the activities but there was lots to choose from!

They are completely free. There’s an app you can download which has a schedule for every day which I found handy as we always lose papers, etc.

We did the puppet show, a crafts morning and water confidence. I can’t wait until we visit again in a few months time as  Eric will really be able to take full advatange of the activities.

In Scarborough we spent the morning exploring the sea front, rode the cliff lift finicular, and went to Sealife centre. We were going to check out Peasolm park but we didn’t have time. Hopefully next visit!

A lovely small village, Filey is a great seaside family location if you want something quiet and secluded. It is clean, picturesque, quiet and has a beautiful seafront and nice beach. We got the bus from our park to Filey train station and walked to the beach from there to explore the area, but there was also beach access a 10 minute walk away from our park.

The beaches were sandy and clean. In Filey, we also went to Filey bird garden and animal park. With a variety of exotic birds, outside areas, nature and animals, it would be great for toddlers.

In Bridlington, we browsed the shops, arcades, seafront and caught a land train. The land train destination was Sewerby hall and gardens. A fantastic place… Beautiful country house surrounded by gorgeous sea views, museum, zoo, cafe, gardens, activities. And the prices are really reasonable!

This was the highlight of the whole trip.

We had a lovely time and it was definitely good value for money. We have since been back to Haven and stayed at a different park; Reighton Sands. Watch our video and read about that here! and Thorpe Park in Cleethorpes which was my favourite park so far. I really recommend Haven, definitely take a look at their recent deals as you can snatch up a good bargain.

Have you been to a Haven? What did you think?

Looks like a wonderful family holiday! 🙂 I do like haven!
    – did you have the days out planned before you went or did you come up with an itinerary when you got there? X

hey! we just decided when we got there, based on the activity schedule which we didn’t know until we arrived, and partly, the weather! we wanted to try and plan the nicest days for the seaside, and didn’t want to miss any good kids activities on the park. 🙂 x
