I’m really sorry the video is a little shaky; it was my first time using the SLR! (Which we usually only use for photos)

The Elsecar Heritage Railway inside the heritage centre is home to steam trains, engines and locomotives. Eric, who loves trains enjoys watching them being serviced and enjoys a picnic sat on a bench just right opposite the railway! There couldn’t be a better spot. The Elsecar heritage railway have special events on throughout the year, like Mince Pie Specials in winter time. Back in January 2017, we did one of these and rode a steam train. It was a really nice experience. We got a coffee with it, too!

One of the best things about there heritage centre is that it’s all within old walls; so you don’t have to worry about any traffic… meaning toddlers can roam freely without you needing to worry. We enjoy a stroll around there looking at everything; before deciding what to do next!

The museum and visitors centre is free, small but has interactive things for kids to get involved with and Eric loves spending half an hour (or longer!) here playing at the lego table, reading books, dress up and looking in the gift shop. It’s definitely worth a look in and it’s here you can pick up trails and maps etc to make more of your day out.

There’s more than enough places to eat, we usually take our own food and choose one of the many picnic spots either on a bench/table inside the Heritage Centre, by the canal, watching the trains or down in the park. The Tee Cup Cafe in Elsecar Park is really nice, the tea rooms/cafe in the Heritage Centre all have outdoor seating and are always welcoming with families, or you can choose from one of the many old pubs in the village (most of them have playgrounds outside)!

It’s very picturesque there and makes a nice change of the scenery from the usual city life. And it’s very convenient to get there from Sheffield, just 3 stops on a train. Parking is no problem, there’s a few car parks to choose from; I recommend choosing one further away and then having a walk around for the day. 🙂

The gift shops and antique stores are absolutely wonderful in Elsecar Heritage Centre, we always can’t resist a browse in the toy shops and the big antique store next to Playmania; even Eric likes looking in all the cabinets, at the old children’s toys and the huuuuge box of vintage toy cars!

You must visit Elsecar Park whilst you’re there, just 5 mins stroll from the heritage centre; and if that isn’t enough then just down the road (10 minutes by bus) is another fantastic family day out at Wentworth Garden Centre.

Have you been to Elsecar Heritage Centre? Like it? Fancy going? I love it, and if you know anywhere similar I’d love to hear your recommendations!
