As you may know, we moved to Hillsborough not long ago and I’m very much new to this area. I’ve been exploring a little bit but there’s still a lot to find out. Luckily, the members of my lovely community group on Facebook are a hive mind for places to go all over Sheffield and it was from this that I found a lovely walk near my house that I never knew about. Middlewood Park, just next to Middlewood Nature Nursery, is an old-school type of playground with 2 roundabouts, swings, 2 climbing frame and slide (one with a tunnel), a single slide and balance beams.[easy-image-collage id=6894]
I walked to the park from Hillsborough near Tesco on Dykes Lane, it took around 20 minutes; but the Middlewood tram stop is just around the corner. The park is tucked away in the residential area of Winn Gardens, postcode S6 1TT. Middlewood Park & Beeley Wood, Sheffield – Things To Do In Sheffield With Kids
From Middlewood Park you can walk along the river and join a trail to Beeley Wood which eventually ends up at Oughtibridge.
The walk is a few miles long, very peaceful and with playgrounds on each end which is an absolute bonus for kids! The woods have wide paths at parts with canopy’s of trees, wildlife and nature to spot and fantastic paddling spots in the river.
To find the Beeley Wood footpath I followed a path from the playground in Middlewood Park. This eventually led me back onto the main road but only for a few minutes until an entrance came into the woods on the right hand side on Middlewood Road North (S6 1ND).[easy-image-collage id=6895]
I had the pram so had to carry it down some stairs but it wasn’t too much of a problem. Right at the bottom we found a spot for paddling, throwing sticks and stones and getting our feet muddy. 🙂
The walk through the woods was so nice and I didn’t know Beeley Woods was ancient woodlands full of different types of trees, wildlife and nature. We saw birds, baby ducks and even some squirrels. When reaching Oughtibridge at the end of the walk many waterfalls were around to spot along the river followed by a playground in the village. Supertram Link buses stop regularly in Oughtibridge back to Hillsborough and this didn’t take long at all. Middlewood Park & Beeley Wood, Sheffield – Things To Do In Sheffield With Kids
All in all a great few hours and I can’t believe it’s so close to my house. All free, too. You can’t beat a walk in the woods!
