How to look after your child’s skin whilst you travel: 5 tips
Your children may find it difficult adjusting to the heat when you travel – it’s uncomfortable and sweaty, and with kids’ skin being so sensitive, it’s easily burned. With that being said, here are five ways to look after your child’s skin whilst you travel.
It might sound like a considerably evident point to make, but it’s crucial you’re applying sunscreen throughout the day during your trip – especially when exposed to high temperatures. Even if the sun doesn’t seem to be shining, UV rays can penetrate clouds and cause burning, sunstroke and even sun poisoning.
Be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen throughout the day, both to yourself and your little ones. Put a decent first layer on around thirty minutes before they head out in the sun, and then reapply every one to two hours. If the kids have been in water, invest in waterproof sunscreen and be sure to top up very frequently. Not only does water reflect sun rays, causing skin to absorb more, but sunscreen will wash off and leave your kids exposed to burning.
Keep them in the shade when possible
Although it’s likely difficult when travelling – after all, you may be visiting somewhere for the heat – try and keep the little ones out of the sun between the hours of 11am and 3pm. This is when the weather is most intense, and the kids will be at highest risk of burning between these hours. If it can be helped, keep them in the shade away from direct sunlight.
Of course, this isn’t always possible. If you’re out in the sun during the day’s peak time, be sure to apply sunscreen regularly and thoroughly as previously mentioned.
Invest in clothing with UV protection
When it comes to buying swimming costumes and clothing for your holiday, your kids will benefit from some outfits with UV protection. Invest in tops, all-in-ones and even hats that shield your child from the rays.
The way UV protective clothing works is that it doesn’t allow the sun to penetrate through to skin, so for children this is absolutely ideal. It means they can swim and sunbathe without worrying about being burned – although it’s still crucial you regularly apply sunscreen – and the breathable material means they won’t overheat throughout the day. For a holiday to the hotter regions of the world, UV protective clothing is an absolute must.
…and don’t put them in tight/uncomfortable clothes
Try to avoid dressing your kids in any clothing that might be too tight, such as jeans or tight leggings as suggested by 1Cover as it could easily rub and cause rashes and uncomfortable, painful marks on your child’s skin. Choose clothing with natural fibres, as sweat can irritate skin – especially for children – and it’ll last for a few days, causing discomfort for the duration of your trip.
Again, UV protective clothing is a great idea as it will be comfortable, lightweight and won’t cause irritation on your child’s skin. Otherwise, choose loose-fitting shorts, t-shirts, dresses and skirts that allow plenty of air circulation and won’t cling to the skin.
Have them wear a hat
Not only will a hat shield your little one’s eyes from the bright sunlight, but it will also provide shade for their face, meaning that you’ll avoid the risk of them being burned. Your face is one of the quickest places to burn – and also the most painful. Alongside applying sunscreen, a hat is a great way to ensure they avoid being burned. Just make sure they keep it on.
