Amazing day out at Sundown Adventureland: Review

Chances are you will have heard of Sundown Adventureland. It’s a theme park specifically for under 10’s in Retford, DN22 0HX. Everyone raves about it and it’s very, very fun for little ones… it’s not often you can go to a theme park for a toddler and they can pretty much go on everything! Being a toddler can be tough sometimes when everyone is bigger than you, but at Sundown Adventureland all the kids are happy because everything is suitable just for them. We had such a great day, one of the best days in a while and I would totally recommend it. Amazing day out at Sundown Adventureland Theme Park: Review

How to get there

Sundown Adventureland is about an hour from Sheffield, it’s just over 34 miles. Unfortunately, and this is the reason why it’s took us so long to visit before now, it would be quite a trek via public transport with walking, train, 2 buses, it would take over 2 hours only one way. It could definitely benefit from more public transport links. We were able to get there fast as I had organised a coach trip so it only took an hour. So much easier, but still not convenient for those who don’t drive. By car, it’s just an hour from Sheffield & there’s plenty of parking.

Prices at Sundown Adventureland

The prices for admission for kids at Sundown depend on their height. Adult or over 90cm is £16 each and children under that are free. This is because the majority of rides you have to be 90cm, so really, you wouldn’t take your child if they were under 90cm as they wouldn’t be able to do much. I did wonder what there would be for Eric to do and the answer is: everything!!!

OK… let’s go!

Firstly, the place is sooo nostalgic… some people don’t like how “old” it is and say it needs to be modernised. Honestly, I love it; I love the retro ness of it and how it’s not changed one bit since I was a little girl. With all these big attractions and theme parks in the UK now, I think it’s lovely to have something original and old school!!

We spent quite some time in the first play area just for under 5’s which is just when you arrive, through the entrance. Eric really loved the snail, toad stool and crocodile slides, monkey swings and panda round about. He could easily have been there for hours. I just loved how cute it was. Around here, there’s toilets, cafe/kiosk, a Christmas ride (which wasn’t on), a pretend village and the play area; this was sooooooo cute!!!!

The park is really full and there’s loads going on. Unlike some theme parks where you walk for ages between things to do, this is very crammed and there’s rides, attractions, play areas etc around every corner. It was great to always have something to look at and not have to walk ages to find something… especially with little legs. We didn’t have a plan of where we would go, just thought to have a wander and see what happened!

It can be hard to decide where to turn first with so much going on everywhere but you have to stay focused, haha. From the under 5’s play area, the angry birds new area and rides were our next place. Before you get there you walk through a big sandpit with little tikes play area and “Captain Sandys Play cove”… it’s huge and has boats, slides, things to climb on. I would take a bucket and spade for next time (if you have time!).

Angry Birds play area is new and the adventure playground there is huge, wooden and really nice! A little bit advanced for Eric but I think if he hadn’t had been so distracted with everything going on he could have tried! Super adventurous with loads to do.

In this bit we really liked the Giddy Piggies ride, Okie Yolkie and Wild Ostrich Safari Ride. None of them we had to queue for and to my surprise Eric wasn’t scared. I could go on all of them with him which was really fun.

Favourite rides were The Wild Ostrich Safari Ride, Tractor Ride, Train Ride, Barrel Rapids and Piggies! The Wild Ostrich Safari ride was really cute as it told a little story on the way around with animals to look at. The train rides we went on did the same, and I loved that because it gives the kids more to look at and be entertained with during the ride. This elephant was on the Wild Ostrich Safari Ride and Eric was so sad when it was over!

There was lots to see on the train rides: sounds, waterfalls, rocks, funny stories and bridges.

This tractor ride was definitely Eric’s favourite! He loved being able to “drive it” around and it took us on a story ride around the farm.

The rapids were gentle but still had a few squirts! This was one of my favourite ones.

More play areas & Villages

It was really lovely to see Eric & his friend Sennen both walking around exploring, touching everything and interacting with it all. Through their eyes it was probably amazing to see so many “pretend real” villages, shops, cafes, etc.

Turn around the corner and another playground… turn around the corner, a water ride, a pirate, a talking Robin Hood, sweety land with real scents, story book village… huge soft play! Even though there was so much to do, Eric didn’t get overwhelmed and I do think it has something to do with how old it is. If it was super flashy, loads of noise etc it could definitely be a sensory overload.

I really loved Lollipop Castle. The decorations, theme of it all, just fantastic. With little sweet shops that really smelt, over sized sweets, funny statues… so much fun and really hands on.

The size of things were either miniature or oversized which is really child like.

Everything just invites touch and is so attractive for kids. 🙂 and adults! Ha. We didn’t even have time to properly explore some areas, like Story Book Village… this was very, very cute and had giant fairytale books and yellow brick road.

This was Toy Town and all the shops/houses were interactive. Inside them all were stairs, things to play with, look at, learn; such as puzzles, crazy mirrors and a fire engine in the police station. More than enough!

Indoor play was pretty impressive and huge, probably one of the biggest I’ve seen yet. Multiple slides, tunnels ,different areas for different ages and a very high frame. Plus a cafe and little zone for crawling babies with blocks.

Pirate ships, play areas and more! In many of these little shops & buildings were slides coming from the top floor and even a small soft play in one of them.

Forte Apache

Amazing day out at Sundown Adventureland Theme Park: Review

Fort Apache was the best playground! Eric really loved it, so much to do… all around the edge of the playground was a playground going around… with tunnels, slides and decking to run around on. In the middle zones were adventure playground equipment, balance beams, slides, tunnels, ropes and zip wires.

Sundown Adventureland was the best day out ever & we really loved it!

Food & drink: I recommend you take your own. I did see a few cafes and kiosks, but as attractions usually are they were overpriced.

Cons: The only two negatives for me were rude staff and no lockers. On entry the staff were not very inviting and at a kiosk I was treated the same. I enquired about lockers but sadly they don’t have any… meaning if you don’t drive you’ll have to carry around everything (and your picnic) all day. I do recommend taking a pram for this reason… or a trolley!!

Have you been to Sundown Adventureland? If it had better transport links I would be back very soon, it was great. It’s really inspired me to go to more theme parks, too, as Eric loved the rides and we had so much fun together going on them.
