The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery with a toddler | Family art activities and more

The Hepworth Wakefield

It’s been a while since I went to a modern art gallery… you don’t really think of doing it with a young child! For my mums birthday, we headed to The Hepworth Wakefield. It’s been on my to-go list for a while. Their free family activities look interesting, along with the whole gallery which has free entry. I love free days out! Plus it’s indoors, which is perfect for this cold and unpredictable weather.

The Hepworth Wakefield is open every day 10-5 and is free to visit. There’s regular special events, family activities, exhibitions and more so check their website as there’s always something fun going on.

Watch our video, I love how it came together.

We traveled by public transport, trains to Wakefield are regular and affordable taking only around half an hour. The Hepworth Wakefield is a short distance from the station.

The bridge upto the gallery

The walk up to the gallery along a bridge is lovely and scenic. The wier has canal boats and a recycled robot! Eric loved this and it was so impressive.

The outside area is good for toddlers because it is pedestrianised so you can have piece of mind letting your little one explore. Eric had fun with the bridge and loved the playground.

There’s a playground! The playground is wooden, clean and just to the side of the gallery. This was good that Eric could play for a little while before we went into look around the galleries… he got something out of it besides just looking at exhibitions all day! Our favourite part of the playground was the play ship and we had a picnic here.

Inside the gallery for kids, free family activities are on regularly at The Hepworth.

There’s trails and explorer backpacks, too. We went to try the free craft activities and “bright light sculptures” which was a lot of creative fun.

For second lunch (as we had already eaten some packed lunch in the playground!) we had some food in the cafe. Me and Ollie had soup, my mum had 3 salad bowl and homous with falafel plate. The food was good but not many choices for dairy free or vegan. There are highchairs and the cafe has has a nice atmosphere. The food was nice and fresh. This set us up before we went to look at the galleries upstairs! Which was what I was most excited for 🙂

The collections and exhibitions are upstairs. I absolutely loved walking around looking at all of the art. The galleries are bright with open spaces and big windows with views of the wier.

The Hepworth is part of the Yorkshire sculpture triangle and is only a stones throw away from Yorkshire sculpture park. I had a really lovely day, one of the nicest afternoons I have had in a long time. I felt like my day was enjoyable for us all; for my toddler with the playground and activities, me and my mum were able to spend quality time together and the gallery was an absolute joy to be in. All of this was completely free, too.

We really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to going back. What do you think? Do you like art galleries? Would you visit here?

Thanks for reading and be sure to leave a comment letting me know what you think of this gallery 🙂
