Best 38 family days out for February and half term 

A guide to the best days out and activities happening in February and half term.  For families in and around South Yorkshire, suitable for all ages!


5th – Historic tour at Sheffield general cemetery suitable for all the family, 2pm meet, walk starts at 2:15.

11th-26th daily at Tropical Butterfly House, Sheffield. Looking good theme half term week with activities, animal shows and lots more! Included in entry fee.

11th – 26th  daily – Winter welly family trail, Longshaw Estate. Hunt for birds and find out where they live around Longshaw estate. Collect trail sheet from tea room at Longshaw or welcome shelter, £1

11th- 26th daily – Half term in the farmyard at Chatsworth House.  Activities going on for half term in the farmyard including tractor rides, animal handling and the adventure playground is open. I recommend taking a picnic & doing a (free) estate walk.

11th-19th daily – Half term at Hardwick. Various activities taking place at Hardwick Hall near chesterfield, 11-4pm throughout half term including a play trail and crafts.

12th  – Muck In Day – Nest boxes. Moorland discover centre at Longshaw, 8am-12:30. Free event, bird ringing demotration at 8am, £5 charge to take home bird box.

15th – Family sculpture workshop at Yorkshire sculpture park 10:30-12:30 £3

13th-17th – Medieval Mayhem. 11-3pm at Bolsover castle, medieval activities plus adventure playground. Admission applies.

18th-26th  – Half term at Brodsworth hall & gardens. Various activities for half term including garden trail and crafts.

18th- Together we play: family workshop. Playful outdoors workshop for all the family at Yorkshire sculpture park inspired by Tread softly exhibition, adults and children £3 at the Garden Studio. Book time slot online.

20th  – Create some wild art! 12-3pm at Gibson Mill, Hardcastle crags, free.

20th – February half term at Sheffield Woodland Kindergarten, 4 day holiday club for 2-8 year olds. Book online.

21st- Animal encounter day! Book for a 1 hour tour at Aston springs farm and handling session where you get to meet lots of animals. £5 adults and children. See also their farm club for Saturday 11th (same link)

22nd – Winter nature trail. Discover the outside world and explore with nature arts at Worsborough Mill in Barnsley. 1Pm start, £4.50 per child, book online.

23rd – Ranger Tots – poo! Meet at Barbrook cottage at 10am, for nature crafts, adventures, snack and a drink. First child £4 + £3 extra child.

23rd – February farm fun day. Lots of activities and food happening at Whirlow farm, booking only, 11-3pm, adults 2.50, kids £3, under 3 free.

23rd- Games day at The Moor, Sheffield. 11-3 with imagination games, all free.

Festivals & theme parks.

18th-26th daily – Lambing festival. Cannon hall farm, tickets £8.95 includes farm, playground and soft play entry plus disco, daily talks, bottle feeding demos and craft activities.

Throughout february – Flamingo land. Open 11-4pm. Although the theme park area is closed, there is lots going on at flamingo land in february, especially between 11th-26th for half term. Ticket prices are cheaper than usual admission but loads of things still happening including zoo, 5 rides for small kids, bird shows, dino dig and from 11th on selected dates is a live Pirates of Zanzibar show.

Museums & galleries.

11th – Happily Ever After at Leeds Central Library. Storytelling enchanted magical experience for 4/7 year olds.

12th – Big sculpture drawing. Use and explore art materials to build a huge 3D drawing at the Hepworth gallery, Wakefield. Free drop in 11-4pm. Also see free musical sculpture session 5th february, free multi-sensory light sculpture sessions 14th-16th, free felt making on the 26th.

13th – 24th daily – Heart dissection workshops. Thackray medical museum in Leeds have heart dissection workshops 3 times daily at 11am, 1pm and 3pm where you can learn all about how the heart works and dissect your own heart with the help of experts from St James’s University Hospital. Workshop is free, £3 per heart charge on the day. Places are limited and sell out fast so book online here. 3 children per family, normal museum admission applies.

18th – Planes, trains & automobiles. Recycled crafts at Elsecar Heritage centre, 11-2, £2.50.

20th-24th – Perfect portrait crafts, free, daily at Experience Barnsley.

20th-26th – Space Trek at Eureka! all week with special space themed activities.

20-26th daily – Half term school activities. Magna science adventure centre and their playground Sci-Tek are open all week during half term, with science workshops, tours and demos going on included in ticket price. Book online for 10% off on your annual pass here.

21st – 24th daily – School holiday crafts. Craft activities taking place daily at Manor Lodge, sandpit and outdoor maze as well. 10:30am-2:3am £3 per child.

21st – Hull Museums mini masterpieces for under 5s. £1.50 per child on the day.

22nd – Stories by the fireside at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet 10:30-12:30.

25th – Saturday sessions. Free hands on activities for the family at Weston Park museum, free. Also see free Discover Days on 22nd and 23rd.

25th- Science alive! 10-4pm at Sheffield Winter Gardens by  Sheffield University, free activities and a treasure hunt.

Dance and theatre.

5th – Big Fish Little Fish rave. 2-4:30pm at Plug, circus theme! Adults £8, child £6. Pre-walkers free.

12th – Christopher Nibble at Barnsley Civic. 2:30pm suitable for 2-8 year olds, £8 adults, £6 conc and £5 child.

18th – The curious adventures of pinocchio. Childrens classic comes to life at the montgomery theatre in Sheffield, two show times 11am-12 and 2pm-3pm, tickets from £10.

22nd – So you think you know dinosaurs? Interactive show at Sheffield city hall featuring TV scientist from ‘Attenborough’s Giant Dinosaur’. 2pm, tickets from £14.
