Why Forge Dam to Endcliffe Park is the best family walk in Sheffield
The Forge Dam to Endcliffe Park walk is the best family walk in Sheffield. We really love it, and I know you will, too. We’ve been going a few years now and when I first found it, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t known about the place before.
Forge Dam is a park with beautiful woodlands in the Fulwood area of Sheffield. There is a fantastic cafe, Forge Dam Cafe, a small playground (with a big slide and a rainbow picnic bench) and beautiful walks through the woodlands, going right up to Endcliffe Park.
The whole walk from Forge Dam to Endcliffe Park takes a few hours. For us, it’s an entire day because there’s so much to see, things to play with, nature, wildlife, paddling and hidden things to find. Eric easily plays in the woods at Forge Dam hours on end.
Where is it?
The postcode is Sheffield S10 3TE. The park/woods has no official car park, but cars do park down a small track down from Brookhouse Hill (next to the house with the white gate). There’s an entrance further up Whitely Lane to Forge Dam which will take you to just behind the playground. The track next to the house with the white gate leads you to the woodlands, so turn right at the bottom for the playground and cafe.
Or, you can walk from Endcliffe Park, S11 7AB. Walk past the playground, past the cafe and head straight up. Go past the ducks and cross the road at the pedestrian crossing, over the road. Nearby on this part is Shepherds Wheel. Just keep walking straight in the woods, and eventually you’ll get to Forge Dam.
How long does it take?
The whole walk, from Forge Dam to Endcliffe Park, is approximately 2 miles. It depends if you’re stopping for a paddle, a play or just having a straight walk through. If you follow the ‘easy going trail’ (there is a sign for it at the beginning of the woods at Forge Dam) this is suitable for pushchairs, and I did this on a mobility scooter, too.
What is there to see and do?
Interesting trees, paddling spots, dens, waterfalls, stepping stones, nature and wildlife, rocks to find and Shepherds Wheel. Don’t miss the good trees to climb just outside the cafe opposite the toilets!
There’s 2 playgrounds: one at Forge Dam, one at Endcliffe Park. Endcliffe Park is a fantastic family park with playground, rides, woodlands and cafe. You can start the walk at either direction. Endcliffe Park has a car park: S11 7AB. Find out more about Endcliffe Park here.
Why should I do this walk?
It’s a whole day out. It’s free. It’s lovely. The nature, the outdoor play, the woodlands, the cafes, the 2 playgrounds just make it a fantastic thing to do for all ages.
